Abstract

The assessment tool discussed in this paper is the International Benchmark Test, an internationally administered programme of assessments developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research. The assessment programme consists of assessments for grade 3 to 10 in English, mathematics and science. This particular programme was chosen as it is a standardised assessment that provides individualised diagnostic feedback for each participating student <s> s </s> . The feedback takes the form of reports that describe student performance at the item level through item descriptors, as well as for a number of disciplinary sub-skills. Students are also placed on a proficiency scale that provides a path for progress in the subject area. This information is available to teachers for each student in the class and for the class as a whole
