Abstract
This publication is concerned with the quality of school teaching and how best to raise standards in order to maximise student learning. The report is from an evaluation of the effectiveness and quality of the initiatives funded in 2001 and 2012 under the auspices of the Quality Teacher Program (QTP) in the Northern Territory. A team of researchers from Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) evaluated the effectiveness and quality of the professional development initiatives funded under the NT QTP, and the extent to which the intended outcomes of the QTP had been achieved. It also contributed to the development of a framework for ongoing and sustainable school-based professional development in Northern Territory schools. Specifically, it: identified changes in teacher knowledge and practices which occurred because of access to the QTP teacher professional development; examined the implementation of action learning strategies in the QTP; and collected information on the extent to which the NT QTP met the Commonwealth aims for QTP of lifting the quality of teaching through targeted professional development, and enhancing professional standards and the status of teachers in both government and non-government schools.
