Abstract
This report is the fourth stage of the Literacy Advance Research Project (LARP), and investigates the student literacy development into Year 7. the research tracked a sub-sample of the initial cohort of students who were in Year 1 in 1998 through to Year 7. The literacy development of Year 7 students was investigated using data obtained from a survey of student attitudes to a number of literacy activities and the statewide assessment program (Achievement Improvement Monitor, AIM). Most students appeared to like the idea of doing new subjects, making new friends and dealing with more complex challenges. The strongest influence on Year 7 literacy achievement was a measure of Year 5 literacy achievement. The influence of Year 1 and Year 3 literacy levels were still significant at Year 7. Year 7 boys and girls differed in their literacy achievement.
