Abstract
The role of education in preparing young people for citizenship has been the focus of research for many decades and includes country-specific, regional as well as international comparative studies. Research by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) has played a key role in advancing our knowledge about civic and citizenship education across different national contexts and the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) is the only international study dedicated to this field of learning. This chapter outlines the background, origins and conceptual approach of this unique study and outlines key findings from the first two study cycles in 2009 and 2016. It concludes with a discussion of implications for research, policy and practices and highlight future directions for this field of research ahead of the third ICCS cycle in 2022, where increased emphasis is given to issues related to engagement via digital technologies, global citizenship and sustainable development.
