Abstract
After so many moves and counter-moves over performance pay for teachers, there is a risk that those involved could lose sight of the main game: what needs to be done to improve teaching. This article suggests the profession's best next move, discussing issues such as the need to distinguish between an assessment system and a recognition system, and the need to distinguish between teacher evaluation by employing authorities and that by professional bodies.
