Abstract
This article reports on the findings of a study of the career prospects of school leavers living in a small isolated rural town in Victoria with high unemployment. Four factors were identified which might influence the career paths of students: ' lack of knowledge of a broad range of work options; lack of opportunity to experience a broad range of work options; lack of role models of a range of occupations; reluctance to move away from the familiar rural environment in pursuit of work or study. The main objective of a career coordinator in such a school should be to help students see beyond the hills to the reality of work options, which tend to be focused on urban centres. In order to explore these four factors, information was required on students who had left the school recently. Five questions were posed: 1. Did former students have clearly defined goals when they left school? 2. Did former students tend to continue to pursue goals set when they left school? 3. What factors encouraged these former students to change their goals? 4. What aspects of the school work-education program did former students find most useful? 5. In the light of post-school experiences, in what ways could the school work-education program be improved?
