Abstract
A strategic plan often arises as the result of regular school review cycles, communicating a vision for the future and a path to reach this desired state (Chiong and Pearson, 2023; Zydowsky, 2016). While the plan outlines a vision and a pathway to achieve it, we suggest that strategic planning itself is an ongoing process that requires continuous attention and privilege in daily school activity. In this paper we draw on the literature related to school strategic planning, an analysis of almost 700 school review reports conducted by Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in Australian schools over the last twelve years, and our own experiences working with school leaders, and in leading school communities. We suggest that there are essential features to consider when strategically planning, and aspects that May enhance, detract, and distract from the process. Our proposal emphasises that collective efficacy is essential for effective strategic planning. By actively cultivating collective efficacy, schools can align their efforts and drive systemic improvement.
