Emotion expression and perception: what do we show, and do we know?

Research output: Types of ThesisDoctoral thesis

Abstract

Emotion expressions contain and convey far more than just emotion. Meta-analytic evidence suggests prototypical emotion expressions (e.g., a scowl of anger, a smile of happiness, etc.) co-occur with the corresponding emotion experience for approximately 13% of expressions (Durán & Fernández-Dols, 2021). Social presence, social relationships, social motivations, and individual differences have all been proposed to influence the expression of emotion. Emotion perception is similarly not simply pattern recognition, with many factors influencing the way emotion is perceived. From familiarity with a person, to individual differences, the perception of emotion is influenced by many features. In this thesis, I explore some of the influences, besides emotion, on emotion expression and emotion perception to better understand their influence.
