Abstract
This paper reports on a study of five subject associations in Victoria. The study looked at subject associations as communities, their significance in the work life of teachers, their role in professional development and how far they impact on the status of the profession. A literature review focussed on professional community membership and was used to develop an eight element framework with which to examine the associations in five case studies. It was also used to focus the research questions and data gathering methods. Case studies included two surveys of 450 teachers and included members and non- members.
