Abstract
This paper explores possible relationships between gender, mathematical confidence, misplaced mathematical confidence, and mathematical performance among secondary school students in a range of schools in the outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The analysis indicates that although the female and male students performed at about the same level on a set of pencil and paper mathematics word problems, the females tended to be less confident than the males that correct answers they had given were, in fact, correct.
