Abstract
Ruth Barcan’s book about academic life and the relationship between this ‘life’ and the changing university, draws on a career worth of reflections encapsulated within the context of the way in which the university is situated in contemporary society. Barcan’s work is timely in the context of the significant changes in higher education policy in the United Kingdom in the past few years, and the current deregulation debate in Australian higher education.
