Abstract
This paper explores how the data environment for schools and school systems is changing and what the trends are for the future. The paper discusses typical use of data analysis in schools, explains how big data is different; comments on the value of learning analytics to build predictive models, and provides examples of leading edge work being undertaken in higher education and schools. The author concludes that there are significant benefits to gain from analysis of big data for educational purposes, but systems and schools must develop skills, procedures and safeguards to ensure the appropriate collection, protection and use of data.
